Faath Art Gallery: A Fusion of History and Modernity

Unveiling the Beauty of Thessaloniki's Underground Art Space

The Faath Art Gallery, designed by Nikolaos Sgouros, is a testament to the harmonious blend of history and contemporary aesthetics. Located in the basement of an enlisted building in Thessaloniki's center, this art gallery offers visitors a unique architectural immersion in the world of art.

The gallery's entrance sets the stage for an extraordinary experience. A specially designed metal staircase, with its transparent sides and presses, serves as a stand-alone sculpture and a permanent exhibit. As visitors descend, they are greeted by a central room featuring a minimal cement pavement, creating a sleek and modern atmosphere.

One of the most captivating elements of the gallery is the transformation of the four load-bearing columns into architectural masterpieces. A beveled illuminated shell turns these columns into visually appealing focal points, seamlessly blending the historical significance of the building with contemporary design.

The perimetrical wall of the gallery showcases the ingenuity of the design. It consists of two different types of construction, creating a captivating visual contrast. The absence of corners in the floor and ceiling enhances the sense of continuity within the space, allowing visitors to mentally expand beyond the confines of the room.

The realization of this design required meticulous attention to detail. The metal staircase, custom-made for the space, stands as a testament to the designer's commitment to creating a visually striking and functional element. The flooring, made of dark gray decorative cement, serves as the foundation upon which the gallery is built. The whitewashed walls, illuminated by carefully placed lighting fixtures, create an illusion of depth, further enhancing the overall ambiance.

Measuring 170 square meters, the Faath Art Gallery offers a unique platform for artists to showcase their work. The space is carefully curated to evoke emotions and thoughts, providing visitors with a truly immersive experience. The historical significance of the building is highlighted through the exposed stone-made masonry, connecting the present with the past.

The Faath Art Gallery, completed between 2010 and 2012, stands as a testament to the designer's dedication to creating a modern space that seamlessly integrates technology and architecture. The attention to detail, from the specially designed staircase to the carefully selected lighting fixtures, ensures that every aspect of the gallery contributes to the overall experience.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2019. This prestigious accolade is awarded to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements while incorporating innovative and practical elements. The Faath Art Gallery is a true gem in Thessaloniki's art scene, captivating visitors with its unique fusion of history and modernity.
